MEDICINAL USE OF MUSTARD

Mustard are dried ripe seeds of Brassica nigra or Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) and their varieties. It belongs to family Cruciferae. Black Mustard seeds are extensively cultivated in Europe, U.S.A. and India. The colour varies from black or dark brown or reddish-brown. Crushed seeds have pungent odour and its tastes bitter. Black mustard seeds contain about 30% fixed oil, 20% proteins and 0.7 to 1.3% of volatile oil. The mustard seed contains about 4% of isothiocynate glycoside called sinigrin (Potassium myronate). Because of enzyme myrosin, in presence of water, sinigrin is hydrolyzed into allyl isothiocynate. It is a condiment. It is emetic when used internally in higher doses. Externally, it is used as counter irritant and rubefacient in the form of poultice or plasters. All the activity o seed is due to sinigrin or consequent volatile mustard oil.
