CONTACT INFECTIONS – SCABIES

Scabies is a skin disease caused by tiny animals i.e., 0.4 mm in size called itch mite. They are parasites that live and breed in the human skin. The female itch mite burrows into the skin to lay eggs, 2 or 3 per day. The life cycle is 10-15 days. Scabies spreads in families and is especially common in children. It spreads most where water for washing is in short supply and where there is overcrowding. The symptoms are appears as a rash or tiny cracks, usually between the fingers and on the wrists, but also may be on the elbows, waist line, thighs, genitals, buttocks and ankles. The rash is like little bumps that itch a lot especially at night. Scratching may result in sores, vesicles or pustules, and sometimes swollen lymph glands and fever. Treatment for scabies – the whole body should be washed and scrubbed with soap and water and the medicine is applied all over except the head and allowed to dry before putting on clean clothes. The medicine are 5% sulphur ointment, or sulphur in oil, Benzyl Benzoate, 25% emulsion, Gamma benzene hexachloride 0.5% in coconut oil. It can be prevented by wash all clothes and bedding and dry them in the sun, Bathe and change clothes daily.
