CLINICAL SPECTRUM OF DISEASE

The clinical presentation varies in its severity, ranging from mild, inapparent, subclinical disease to severe disease which may eventually lead to death. This is known as the disease spectrum. The severity of the disease varies from person to person and is dependant on several factors like virulence of organisms, resistance of the host, and environmental conditions. Subclinical cases are carriers and act as reservoirs of the agent. As the disease is subclinical or extremely mild, they are not treated. The clinical spectrum can be classified as subclinical case, extremely mild case, mild case, moderately severe case, severe case and death. Three levels of prevention strategies are primary prevention, secondary prevention and tertiary prevention. Primary prevention can be classified into health promotion and specific protection. Secondary prevention can be classified into early diagnosis and prompt, adequate treatment. Tertiary prevention can be classified into disability limitation and rehabilitation.
